What is the Awesome Oscillator?
The Awesome Oscillator (AO) was created by trader Bill Williams as a straightforward way to gauge market momentum by comparing a short-term average of price action to a longer-term one. It uses the median price (high plus low, divided by two) rather than close, making it sensitive to each bar's full range rather than just its close.
Formula
Median Price = (High + Low) / 2
AO = SMA(Median Price, 5) - SMA(Median Price, 34)Parameters
| Parameter | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Fast Period | 5 | SMA length for the short-term median price average |
| Slow Period | 34 | SMA length for the long-term median price average |
| Source | (High+Low)/2 | Median price used in both averages |
Signal Interpretation
- AO crossing above zero signals bullish momentum taking over; crossing below zero signals bearish momentum.
- The "Saucer" setup: AO stays positive but dips and turns back up signals a continuation buy.
- The "Twin Peaks" pattern: a second peak below the first while AO is above/below zero hints at a reversal.
- Increasing bar heights away from zero indicate accelerating momentum in that direction.
- Sustained readings near zero suggest a ranging, low-momentum market.
Tips & Best Practices
- Pair AO with Bill Williams' own Alligator indicator, as the two were designed to be used together in his trading system.
- Treat AO primarily as a momentum confirmation tool rather than a standalone entry signal, since it lags price by design (it uses SMAs, not EMAs).
- Watch for divergence between price highs/lows and AO histogram peaks/troughs as an early warning of weakening trend momentum.
