What is Market Structure (BOS/CHoCH)?
Tracks the sequence of swing highs and lows to determine whether the market is making higher-highs/higher-lows or lower-highs/lower-lows, flagging the exact moments that structure breaks or flips.
How It Works
- Swing highs/lows are identified using a
lookbackwindow on each side. - The most recent confirmed swing points establish current structural bias.
- Break of Structure (BOS): price closes beyond the most recent swing point in the direction of the existing trend.
- Change of Character (CHoCH): price closes beyond the most recent swing point against the existing trend.
Parameters
| Parameter | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| lookback | 5 | Bars on each side used to confirm a swing high/low pivot |
Signal Interpretation
- A BOS in an uptrend confirms bulls remain in control — continuation bias.
- A BOS in a downtrend confirms bears remain in control.
- A CHoCH after a sustained uptrend is an early warning sellers are stepping in.
- A CHoCH after a sustained downtrend is an early warning buyers are stepping in.
- A CHoCH followed by a BOS in the new direction is the strongest confirmation of a genuine reversal.
Tips & Best Practices
- Treat a single CHoCH as an alert, not a full reversal confirmation.
- Increase lookback on noisy/lower timeframes to filter minor swings.
- Combine with Order Blocks and Fair Value Gaps around the CHoCH point.
