NixPulse Momentum
NixPulse's in-house momentum oscillator that smooths rate-of-change into a histogram and signal-line pair, built to flag momentum shifts earlier and cleaner than legacy oscillators.
What is NixPulse Momentum?
An in-house oscillator engineered to track the speed of price change rather than its direction alone. It reduces the noise found in traditional rate-of-change readings by running the raw momentum value through a two-stage smoothing process, then compares it against its own signal line to surface a histogram.
How It Works
The indicator computes a rate-of-change value over the length lookback period, then smooths it over smooth bars to remove single-bar noise while preserving turning points. This smoothed line is the Momentum reading. A signal line is derived by further averaging it, and the Histogram plots the distance between Momentum and Signal — expanding bars mean momentum is accelerating, contracting bars mean it is decelerating.
Parameters
| Parameter | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| length | 20 | Lookback period used to calculate the base rate-of-change |
| smooth | 5 | Smoothing period applied to the raw momentum reading |
| signal | 9 | Period used to derive the signal line from smoothed momentum |
Signal Interpretation
- Momentum crossing above Signal suggests momentum is building in the current direction.
- Momentum crossing below Signal suggests momentum is fading or reversing.
- Histogram bars growing confirm accelerating momentum; shrinking bars warn of a stall.
- A Histogram flip often precedes short-term trend changes.
- Divergence between price and Momentum flags weakening conviction.
Tips & Best Practices
- Use on the same timeframe as your trade horizon.
- Pair with a trend filter so signals are only acted on with the broader trend.
- Widening
smoothreduces whipsaws in choppy, low-volume conditions.
