NixPulse Smart Bands
An adaptive moving-average band overlay from NixPulse that widens and tightens with recent volatility instead of a fixed multiplier, aiming to hug price more naturally through changing regimes.
What is NixPulse Smart Bands?
A volatility-adaptive envelope built around a central moving average (the Basis line). Unlike classic fixed-multiplier bands, Smart Bands scales its width using a rolling measure of recent price dispersion, so the channel breathes wider in volatile stretches and tightens during calm periods.
How It Works
The Basis line is a moving average of the selected maType over the length period. Smart Bands measures recent volatility expansion over the same window, blends that with the mult factor, and applies it as an adaptive offset to plot the Upper and Lower bands. Because the offset is volatility-weighted rather than a static multiple, bands compress faster after a volatility spike fades and expand faster as a genuine breakout gathers pace.
Parameters
| Parameter | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| length | 20 | Lookback period for the Basis moving average and volatility read |
| mult | 2 | Scaling factor applied to the adaptive volatility offset |
| maType | SMA | Moving average type used to compute the Basis line |
Signal Interpretation
- Price hugging or riding the Upper band suggests a strong, sustained move.
- A sharp band squeeze often precedes a volatility expansion and directional breakout.
- A close back inside the bands after piercing an edge can mark short-term exhaustion.
- Basis line slope shows the underlying trend direction the bands adapt around.
- Repeated tags of one band without the Basis being reclaimed favors continuation.
Tips & Best Practices
- Use the band squeeze as a setup trigger, waiting for a confirmed breakout candle.
- Combine with NixPulse Volatility to confirm a band expansion is backed by a genuine ATR% rise.
- Switching
maTypeto an EMA makes the Basis more reactive for shorter-term trading.
