What is Session Volume Profile?
A variant of the Volume Profile / VPVR concept (see the separate Volume Profile entry for the full breakdown of Point of Control, Value Area, and volume nodes). The difference here is the reset behavior: it clears and rebuilds its histogram at the start of each new trading session, giving every session its own independent volume-by-price picture for intraday analysis.
Formula
At session start: clear histogram
For each price level within the session: Volume(level) += traded volume
POC = price level with highest Volume(level) in current session
Value Area = band from POC outward containing ~70% of session volumeParameters
| Parameter | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Session boundary | Exchange trading session | Defines the reset point |
| Row/tick size | Auto | Price granularity of the histogram bins |
| Value Area % | 70% | Percentage of session volume defining the Value Area |
Signal Interpretation
- Today's session POC acting as support/resistance for tomorrow's open is a common intraday reference.
- Volume concentrated near the day's high/low (rather than middle) suggests a trending session.
- Comparing consecutive sessions' POCs shows whether the fair-value area is migrating.
Tips & Best Practices
- Use for intraday and short-swing decisions; for a custom multi-session window use Fixed Range Volume Profile.
- Overlay the previous session's profile to spot whether price trades inside or outside yesterday's value area.
